American country music singer John Anderson, known for his traditional country sound and a career that produced five No. 1 hits on the country charts, has died at the age of 71.

His family announced his death through social media, remembering him not only as a gifted musician but also as a devoted family man.

“To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more. He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely and made every ordinary moment feel special,” the family said.

Anderson was a familiar figure in country music for nearly five decades. His contributions to the genre earned him induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024. Before achieving success, he even worked as a roofer at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, one of country music’s most iconic venues.

Fellow Musicians Pay Tribute

Tributes poured in following news of Anderson’s death, including messages from country music stars Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.

Shelton, who considered Anderson a personal hero and friend, reflected on the opportunity to know the singer beyond his music.

“I am a very lucky man. I got the opportunity to find out that my hero wasn’t just the guy I hoped he’d be,” Shelton said.

His wife, Gwen Stefani, also expressed her admiration for Anderson and the lasting impact of his songs.

“We loved him!! His music is part of our family’s hearts for ever!!” she wrote.

From Florida Roots to Nashville Success

Born and raised in Florida, Anderson grew up in a family with diverse musical tastes, ranging from big band jazz to the Rolling Stones. After finishing high school, he moved to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country singer.

His early years in the music industry were marked by hard work and determination. Anderson performed at night while taking on manual labour jobs during the day to support himself.

In a 2024 interview, he recalled working as a delivery driver, transporting gravel to customers while continuing to chase his musical ambitions.

“I’d fill up the truck with gravel and take the truck to wherever the order was and drop it off. A lot of odd jobs, but never lost sight of the fact that I really wanted to play,” he said.

Anderson released his debut single in 1975, but his breakthrough came two years later with “I’ve Got a Feelin’ (Somebody’s Been Stealin’).” The song helped establish his place in the country music scene and marked the beginning of a steady rise on the charts.

A Distinctive Voice and a String of Country Hits

Anderson scored his first country Top 5 hit in 1981 with “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday).” The song earned him his only Grammy nomination, in the category of Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

His distinctive vocal style, combining sincerity with a touch of humour, became a defining feature of his music.

The success of the single was followed by a series of major hits. “Wild and Blue,” “Black Sheep” and “Swingin’” all reached the top of the country charts.

“Swingin’,” in particular, stood out for its energetic arrangement and broader commercial appeal. It became Anderson’s only entry on the US pop chart, helping introduce his music to audiences beyond traditional country listeners.

Career Revival With ‘Seminole Wind’

The second half of the 1980s proved challenging for Anderson. After being dropped by Warner Bros., he moved between record labels as he sought to regain his momentum.

His career experienced a major revival in 1992 with the release of Seminole Wind. The album produced three Top 3 country hits, including its title track, a tribute to his home state of Florida, and “Straight Tequila Night.”

Both songs remained popular on country radio and continued to attract listeners through streaming platforms.

Anderson followed that success with Solid Ground, another commercially successful album that featured the chart-topping single “Money in the Bank.”

Over the course of his career, he recorded 22 studio albums, building a catalogue that reflected his commitment to traditional country music.

Illness Nearly Ended His Career

Anderson’s later years were marked by a serious health challenge. In 2017, he developed a non-cancerous tumour that left him hospitalised and threatened his ability to continue performing.

In an interview with Billboard in 2020, he described the severity of his illness, including a period when he experienced almost complete hearing loss.

“I had been very, very ill,” he said. “I had almost 100% hearing loss … that really almost put an end to me.”

Anderson said prayer played an important role in helping him through the difficult period, adding that his hearing gradually began to return.

His recovery eventually led to the recording of Years, released in 2020 and produced with Dan Auerbach of the blues-rock band the Black Keys. The album represented a determined return to recording after his health struggles.

A Lasting Love for Music

Despite his illness, Anderson continued performing live and remained grateful for the opportunity to share his music with audiences.

In 2024, he reflected on how his recovery had changed his outlook on life, saying he had learned to appreciate each day more deeply.

“I’ve really been enjoying every day. I live out in the woods and take a lot of lessons from my little wildlife friends. They pretty much live day to day, minute to minute. Enjoying that minute, enjoying this time,” he said.

He added that he was thankful to still be able to perform music.

Anderson’s death marks the loss of a distinctive voice in American country music. From his humble beginnings in Florida and Nashville to his chart-topping singles and Hall of Fame recognition, his career spanned nearly 50 years and left a lasting mark on the genre.
